17 Dec
It is important

Ace

There is a new report out today about children and young people getting abused. The report has come from the Children’s Commissioner; it is her job to speak up for children and young people in Britain. Click on this link to see the report:

The UK needs to hekp abuse victims speak up more

KA Maracas

The report says that this abuse is happening all over Britain. This happened in Rotherham and Rochdale where groups of asian men abused young women, but it’s not just asian men – it is men from all walks of life who do this.

Ghalib was taken to hospital because his hip was broken by the abuse

Annabel

The report says that all professionals should do a better job of helping young people and not blame them when they are being abused like this.

The report is very good but it is quite hard to understand. I think the Children’s Commissioner should make these reports easy to read for people who have a learning disability.

Abuse by Jimmy Savile – What a terrible story!

20 Nov
jimmy savile - child abuser

Jimmy Savile in his favourite t-shirt

Jimmy Savile - just how did he get away with it?

Jimmy Savile was a star but he did bad things. He targeted children and young people, both men and women. He sexually abused them, this means he was touching them on their private parts and raped them or forced them to have sex.

why didnt anybody stop jimmy savile whilst he was alive?

I am very angry and upset about this, how did he get away with it?

Jimmy Savile had friends who also abused people and they all kept the secret together

Because he had friends in high places who covered it up.

the truth about jimmy savile and his cronies is disgusting

I am disgusted about what happened, I feel sorry for the victims. It is hard for them to speak up because they are scarred and they don’t know who to tell. They might worry that their family and friends won’t believe them.

it is hard for victims to speak up about abuse

A lot of the victims were disabled people, it is even harder for people who have learning disabilities to speak up about abuse.

alot of the abuse happened in the 70s and 80s - people were'nt so aware of the threat in those days

Also a lot of the abuse happened in the 1970s and 1980s when people were not aware of sexual abuse as much as they are now.

The UK needs to help abuse victims speak up more

In Britain we need to get better at helping victims to speak up about abuse.

Let all disabled people support each other to tell about abuse

Disabled people should support each other to tell about abuse and help the victims. So speak up by telling the police, support workers or call a helpline like:

Ace knows what is going on

 Ace says:

Police and Crime Commissioners are people who can be voted in to manage and check how the Police do their jobs.

Annabel - the boss

Annabel:

The elections will happen on 15 November in 41 areas across England and Wales (but not London) Each area will have one Police and Crime Commissioner.

why should we bother to vote?

Why is it important and why should we bother to vote?

It is important

It’s important because each person who might be elected has different ideas about things.

Choose someone who supports equal rights

So it is important to choose the person who supports equal rights, disability rights, women’s issues and knows about disability hate crime.

Your vote will make a difference

So it’s important to vote because your vote will make a difference. To find out more about the people in your area you can vote for, go to this website:

Winterbourne View – Stop the Bullying!

12 Nov
In the dock - the 11 Winterbourne View careworkers

GUILTY – 6 of the 11 Winterbourne View careworkers have been sent to jail

KickAss Maracas is not happy

I am very angry and upset about what I have heard on the news about Winterbourne View. Winterbourne View was a home for disabled people where the staff were bullies. They closed it down and now the bullies have been sent to jail – see BBC News 26th October.

The people who lived there have been moved to different places but a journalist has found out that many are still being bullied in the new places – BBC News 29th October.

Ace is pissed off

This is disgusting, I hate this so much that this is happening again. It will cause problems for the disabled people in their later life. I think they should stop all the bullying, it’s not fair and it’s not funny!

Annabel annoyed big time

It is wrong, professionals should step in and stop this as soon as it happens.

Malak is fed up with all the bullying that goes on

A lot of bullying is going on, it is getting worse and the bullies are getting away with it!

Dont put up with bullying! Report it to sort it!

Many disabled people get worried and frightened when they hear these stories in the news. They might think that this will happen to them if they have to live in a home.

If you are being bullied ring the police straightaway, we say:

Report it to Sort it!

Annabel

On the 23rd October 2012 it was a sad day because five years ago on that date mother and daughter, Fiona Pilkington and Frankie Hardwick, killed themselves.

Malak

They killed themselves because they were fed up with the years of bullying they went through. No one helped them, not even the police. They tried to get help, they phoned the police 30 times but they didn’t listen.

Ace Man

If the police had helped them and stopped the bullies they would be alive now and maybe they might read our blog!

Kick Ass Maracas

The Equality and Human Rights Commission is a group whose job it is to make Britain more equal and to speak up for disabled people. Last year they did a report called ‘Hidden in Plain Sight ‘about disability hate crime. On the 23rd October they put a new report called ‘Out in the Open’. This one is all about what should be done about disability hate crime and you can see it on their website:

EHRC – Inquiry into disability-related harassment

Malak

I think we should make October 23rd a special day to remember the Pilkingtons and other victims of disability hate crime. It could also be a day when we get disabled people to speak up about bullying and for professionals to learn more about how they can do a better job of helping. Look at the report for more ideas about what professionals and groups can do to improve things.

Man with learning disabilities abused by family

9 May

A man with learning disabilities called Ghalib Hussain was abused by his family for over three years

A man with learning disabilities called Ghalib Hussain was abused by his family for over three years.  Ghalib came to this country for an arranged marriage and could speak very little English.  The marriage didn’t work and the family of his wife started to abuse him.

The family were cruel and violent to Ghalib and treated him like a slave

The family were cruel and violent to Ghalib and treated him like a slave.  They thought he was a financial burden on them because he couldn’t work.

Ghalib told the Police about being beaten and not being allowed to go back to Pakistan

They threatened to bury him alive and cut his tongue out and beat him all the time!  He escaped and was found wandering in the street.  The police came and someone in the street helped to translate.  When the police asked if they could take him home he go very frightened and clung to a lamp post.  Then Ghalib told them about being beaten and not being allowed to go back to Pakistan.

A relative took Ghalib home where he was very badly beaten for speaking out

A relative took Ghalib home where he was very badly beaten for speaking out.  Four days later a police officer and a social worker went to the house and asked to speak to Ghalib alone.  The family lied and said he wasn’t there but the police found Ghalib huddled on the sofa.

Ghalib told them about how he was badly treated

Ghalib told them about how he was badly treated.

The professionals did a good job by going to help him and making sure they talked to him alone

Ghalib was taken to hospital because his hip was broken by the abuse

Ghalib was taken to hospital because his hip was broken by the abuse.

The members of his family who abused Ghalib are being charged

It’s great that Ghalib has got out of this terrible situation and is getting help.  The members of his family who abused Ghalib are being charged with threatening to kill, grievous bodily harm and fear of violence by harassment and false imprisonment.

The family are denying what they did because they think it was OK to treat Ghalib like that because he has a learning disability

They are all denying what they did because they think it was ok to treat Ghalib like that because he has a learning disability.

Men jailed for Hate Crime leaflets

12 Mar
Five men prosecuted for making leaflets calling for the death penalty for gay, lesbian and bisexual people

Left to right: Ihjaz Ali, Mehboob Hussain, Umar Javed, Razwan Javed, and Kabir Ahmed

Malak is very angry about the hate crime leaflets that were delivered by the bullies I saw on the news the other day a story about bullying gay people. Some men in Derby put leaflets through the doors of the houses around their Mosque. The leaflets said that being gay is wrong and that gay people should be killed.

Ace is angry for the people who got the leaflets delivered

This is very upsetting and frightening for the people who saw the leaflets.

Kick Ass Maracas is upset and cross about the hate crime leaflets that have been delivered to people

I heard about this too and it made me upset and cross. The police got involved, they found out who made the leaflets and they arrested them.

Annabel says a UK law was passed in 2010 which makes it illegal to bully gay, lesbian or biselxual people

This is very important because this is the first time anyone has been charged by the police for bullying gay people in this way. In 2010 there was a new law which says it is wrong to:

“get people to join in with bullying people who are gay, lesbian or bisexual”

Malak is Muslim and does not believe that gay people should be attacked in any way

I am a Muslim and I don’t agree with bullying gay people. In the Muslim faith we believe that all bullying is wrong and should be stopped. Our faith also tells us that we should follow the laws in Britain. Most Muslim people don’t agree with those men who made these leaflets.

Ace will tell you about some useful websites for groups that support gay muslims

I am proud to be gay and I know that Muslims can be gay too. I think it is awful for the Muslim gay people who saw the leaflets, they must have been really scared. It can be hard to be a gay Muslim, here are some websites with some information about groups who support gay Muslims:
